Model Armstrong Siddeleys
In the past there have been a few models of Armstrong Siddeley cars. Early ones were really toys from Dinky, Corgi and Spot On and more recently there have been 1:43 scale models of the Star from Pathfinder, the 346 and the Whitley from Big River Models.
Prices of the early toy/models vary considerably according to condition but a good quality Dinky Hurricane can fetch up to £150. The Star, which origianlly sold for £65, has been seen on e-bay at up to £275. The two Big River Models cars, both the 346 and the Whitley, which are made in Australia can still be bought new for between £110 and £140 or so depending on current exchange rates.
All of these cars are nominally to the 0 gauge model railway scale of 1:43.
Now there are opportunities to buy brand new models of post-war Armstrong Siddeleys in two scales.
Oxford Diecast have produced the Star in 1:76 scale in four different authentic company paint schemes in 1:76 scale (equivalent to 00 gauge model railways) and they have also produced a further version of this model for Hornby Railways in their Scaledale range. These models have been available for a couple of years now. The models retail at around £4-00 each
Base Toys have produced a 1:76 scale Whitley in two different colour schemes again retailing at around £4-00. This has been available for about three years.
Now, in 2011, Oxford Diecast have produced two superb new models in 1:43 scale. They are a open top Hurricane and a Lancaster saloon. These models have to be seen to be believed. They are available from most good model shops at around just £20-00 each. These two models are expected to be repeated in 1:76 scale later this year. Keep an eye out for them. They really are good.
