Southern Day 2008

Southern Day 2008 will be on Sunday 10th August when we plan to visit Pendon Museum, Long Wittenham, Oxfordshire and Mapledurham House. All ASOC members and friends are welcome at this event. But you must pre-book with Ann Blatchford.

On Southern Day our morning visit will be to the Pendon Museum of the Vale of White Horse. This museum is a social history museum portraying life in the Vale of White Horse, the stretch of county from Abingdon to Swindon bordered to the South by the Berkshire/Oxfordshire Downs and to the north by the Chilterns and Cotswolds. The history is shown in miniature as, naturally, it is impossible to get a 400 square mile area indoors.

Also at Pendon is a miniature replication of an area of Dartmoor.

The nature of Pendon is such that museum guides will provide us with a conducted private showing whilst it is not open to the public but we MUST BE THERE AT 10.00 am to participate and to ensure that we have left before the museum opens to the public later in the day.

Pendon Museum is situated in the village of Long Wittenham in Oxfordshire, on the south bank of the River Thames between Abingdon and Wallingford. For more information about Pendon Museum see the museum's web site www.pendonmuseum.com

After visiting Pendon we will go to visit Mapledurham House which is on the north bank of the Thames about 15 miles distant, closer to Reading.

It is essential that participants pre-book with Ann Blatchford at least four weeks prior to this event (preferably sooner) as Pendon requires to know numbers attending to ensure that they provide adequate guides for us and we need to pay them!!!
